In a time when comic book prices are high, you may feel the need to cut down on your weekly comic book spending; but that doesn’t mean you have to cut down on your weekly comic book reading. There are comic book artists who have their work available online for your visual enjoyment.

The Shiga Books website refers to artist Jason Shiga who won the 2004 Eisner award for “Talent Deserving of Wider Recognition”.  The site not only highlights Shiga’s work, but also links the reader up with some of Jason’s favorite web comics.

Batgirl versus Cain

A famous Greek playwright said there were only five plots - those of Lust, Revenge, Power, Money, and Love. We lovers of comics are used to seeing plots rehashed over and over again. One of my postmates has commented on the direction Superman and Batman are going, which, is going to lead us to a 2009 without Supes and Bats. He commented that these seem too similar to Knightfall and World Without Superman. To me it seems they are just getting started.

I would guess that most readers of “Batgirl” are following the RIP storyline. This story takes place before RIP, which they don’t bother to mention. We also have the latest last battle of Cain and Batgirl.  How many time have we seen these evil mentor/student battles before? 100 times? 200 times? A lot more?  And Batgirl doesn’t kill him in the end?  What a surprise. But, if you read “Robin” this week, we learn that Bruce has adopted Casandra, which doesn’t happen until this issue. But isn’t Bruce sort of dead? That is, if this story takes place before RIP. I am so confused.

Basically, it is a run of the mill mini-series which will be out in trade soon but I can’t recommend spending the 15 or 20 dollars it will cost.

Heroes

We have season finales, New Year’s breaks, Thanksgiving breaks, and now volume breaks. So what do we make of “Heroes”?

Before Skylar signs unto the Enterprise, we have him gaining new powers every week. Eventually, they would have the same problem that they had with Superman of years past in that he was too powerful and it was hard coming up with villains that could give him a run for his money. So, if you temporarily kill him (thanks Hayden) maybe you better chop up the body or something so he doesn’t pull a Jason and keep rising from the dead. And how many people does he have to kill before redeeming himself? And why kill Ellie even after she gave him her powers plus benefits?

There seem to be lots of people with powers, but why do they have to kill off all the Wire veterans?  Frozen Omar and Vortex Bubbles. Shame. They really don’t have to introduce new power people every week and hopefully in Vol 4, Civil Heroes… sorry Fugitives they can concentrate on a core group. But if the serum gave out random powers how come Peter got his back? And why don’t they mention Peter’s greatest power in that a 31-year-old guy could convince a now 18 Hayden Panettiere to marry him? In those “Cheers” conversations when it got around to which super power you’d like to have, this one never came up, but I wouldn’t have minded having it many moons ago.

But as a lead into next season it was fine. Still, if we have Mr. Sulu and Lt Worf on board now and Skylar heading for outer space who in the Star Trek universe can we expect?

Supergirl

What the heck has happened to poor old Supergirl? Am I too old remembering little old Linda Lee in the orphanage? Boy, has she grown up.

In this, the 79th incarnation of Supergirl, she is the 785th last daughter of Krypton. Of course, with 100,000 Kandorians running around we may need a super-census. But still, it seems the first thing they ran out of is fabric for the costume. Now, personally, I like the halter top and mini-skirt look but it seems almost everyone in the DC universe has taken notice.

In “Brave and the Bold” we have two instances. When she comes on to Hal Jordan, he thought-balloons to himself: “She’s only 17, she’s only 17.”  I must have not read the part where Supes or anyone else mentions her age, but what is the age of consent in outer space anyway? In a subsequent B and B she asks Lobo to take her somewhere and he states that he doesn’t work for free. She rips off her disguise, Lobo leers at her chest and she yells,” The S!!!”

In “Supergirl and The Legion of Super Heroes,” the group is summoned off to a mission. Naturally, everyone else is using flight rings, but Supergirl leads the flight. One member inquires to another as to where they are going and why. His friend states: “You mean other than the view?” In Crisis 5, Libra offers SuperG to Luthor with: “If you show willing, I might even let you be first in line with Supergirl”.

Eventually, we are going to have to have one of those “Cheers” discussions about SuperG. If she is invulnerable and she is still a virgin, can anyone but another Kryptonian deflower her? If all parts of her are invulnerable can her eggs be fertilized by anyone other than a Kryptonian? And if Kal could resist Lois and Lana all these years, why is SuperG so horny?  Inquiring minds want to know.

Hayden Panettiere

Last night the third volume of “Heroes” came to end, and while it did introduce a whole new batch of characters and powers, I was underwhelmed. Of course I was underwhelmed all season. Sure they gave us the best interpretation I’ve seen of Puppet Master and a good helping of Kristen Bell, but those were hidden gems to be found in a season that moved at a snail’s pace. But there is hope for next season. Despite firing a high profile Marvel Comics employee, the producers of “Heroes” are going to take another page from the Marvel Universe with their version of the Super Hero Registration Act.

Wolverine

I know this has been a complaint from everyone over the past few years, but with the Wolverine trailer hitting the net, I felt it was time to mention it here on Comix 411.  There are too many comic books that feature or guest star Wolverine.

Wolverine currently has three on going monthly series: “Wolverine,” “Wolverine: Origins,” and “Wolverine: First Class”.  He also appears from time-to-time in the X-men books (Uncanny, Legacy, and Astonishing), X-Force, New Avengers, various mini-series and crossovers.  I thought it was ridiculous in the 90s, but it’s actually gotten worse.

Trek

Since I began writing for Comix 411, I have written two blogs (here and here) about the new Star Trek film set to be released in May of 2009.  I am 34 years old and I have been a Star Trek fan for as long as I can remember - longer than I have been a comic book reader.

When it was announced that there would be a new Star Trek film, I was excited.  I became more excited when I heard that they were going to be doing a film with the original Star Trek characters staring new younger actors.  I felt this would be a good a good way to jump start the franchise again.

So we are now five months away from the release and we are all waiting and wondering if the film will be any good.  It will be good, if they focus on the reason why the original series worked so well.  The reason the original series worked so well is because of the relationship and chemistry of the three main characters: Kirk, Spock, and McCoy.

Power Girl and her friends

Today’s topic is on the growth of breasts is comic books. We are only discussing American comics because anyone who reads Japanese anime or hentai knows that American breasts cannot touch Asian ones. So, we will stick to the good ol’ USA.

Studying the history of American comics one can notice that women in comics were usually portrayed as well-endowed. In fact, a study which, unfortunately I cannot document at the moment, discovered that women in comics during the 1940s and 1950s were usually a cup size larger than American women at that time. How they determined cup size in comics I have no idea, but they did quote figures from the Playtex Corporation which, back then, was the dominant producers of women’s unmentionables. But any discussion of women’s attributes was forbidden by the Comics Code so all we did was look.
